De Chazaux Courtyard (Schiffstrasse 1)
The regulations regarding the uniform design of the houses applied only to the fronts. In the gardens and courtyards at the back there developed a colourful diversity of green oases that was often hidden to visitors in the city centre. One of the few inner courtyards accessible to the public is at Schiffstrasse no. 1. From 1721 to around 1759, this property was home to the De Chazaux manufactory of Gobelin tapestries, where great wall hangings were produced to meet court requirements. To this day, Gobelins manufactured in Erlangen can be found in Bayreuth, Fulda, Passau and Regensburg.
