Huguenot Square and Huguenot Church
Here on the west side of Huguenot Square, or Hugenottenplatz, is the Protestant-Reformed Huguenot Church. This is the oldest and best-preserved building in Erlangen New Town. As the first reformed “temple” to be built in Germany following the flight of the Huguenots from France, the church is a place of nationwide significance. The foundation stone was laid on 14 July 1686, and with it the construction of the New Town had begun. The edifice itself is characterized by the tall oval windows running along its sides, its high hipped roof and a tower that was not built until between 1732 and 1736.
