Water Tower
In order to power the “Große Fontaine“ and other fountains in the Castle Garden, in 1705 an originally six-storey water tower was built at the corner of Apfelstrasse and Wasserturmstrasse. Reduced in height by three storeys for structural reasons in 1876, the building is the most important technical monument from the early years of the New Town. A complex pressure system pumped water from the River Regnitz more than three kilometres up to the Tower through an arrangement of hollowed tree trunks and copper pipes, overcoming a 20-metre difference in altitude in the process.
