Castle Square and Market Square
Today’s Castle and Market Square formed the “Grande Place” in the 1686 plans for Erlangen New Town. It is exactly twice as big as Huguenot Square. The buildings included in the proposal – three-storey houses along the main fronts and two-storey houses in the open corners of the square – were constructed largely as planned and remain present in the same arrangement to this day. The original building style and its aesthetic effect can best be appreciated on the north side, where two double courthouses stand both to the right and left of the Hauptstrasse.
