The Kitzmann private brewery

Back to tour

Beer has been brewed here, at this stately premises at number 25 Südliche Stadtmauerstrasse, for more than 300 years. Following the granting of a margravial privilege to build a brewery in 1712, the business was taken over by Johann Lorenz Kitzmann in 1833. During the boom years of Erlangen’s beer exports after 1870, Kitzmann was a medium-sized brewery. After the two world wars the company continued to grow and from the 1970s, benefited - as the city’s only surviving beer manufacturer at the time - from the loyalty of the people of Erlangen to their local beer varieties.
